#GetAhead: Helpful Tips for Staying on Top of College Deadlines

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” - Mark Twain

For those of you who are high school seniors, we know that December can be one of the busiest times in your lives. Between school work, final exams, and other activities, it’s quite an ask to add one more thing to your plate: college application deadlines.

To give you some extra motivation as you put the finishing touches on your applications, here are some tips to help you #GetAhead of those winter deadlines:

1. We hope you won’t wait until the last minute to submit. But should you find yourself burning the midnight oil completing your applications, remember that as long as you submit by 11:59 p.m. your local time, on the deadline day, you have met the deadline.

2. If your recommender is not receiving your Common App emails and requests, be sure to tell them to add sfsupport@commonapp.net to their address book, and to check their spam and junk folders to make sure our messages weren’t automatically filtered.

3. Having trouble starting your essay? Just remember - your application tells your story. What are the most important things about you that you would want a college admissions office to know?

4. Don’t forget to save your work! We encourage you to take breaks as you work on your application. But, if you leave your computer idle for too long, the system will sign you out. Be sure to either save your essays in another document, such as Word, or hit the “Continue” button within the application to ensure you work is saved.

5. If you are up, we are up. Don’t forget that you can always find help, 24/7/365, from our Support Center. You can reach us directly at appsupport.commonapp.org or appsupport@commonapp.net. Applicant chat is available Monday-Friday, 3-9 p.m. ET.

Bonus tip: as you may have heard, Common App onTrack has arrived in the App Store and is now available to download. This free app, a mobile companion to the online application, will help you keep track of deadlines, view your My Colleges list, and see each college's submission status. Want to learn more? Check out this YouTube video to help get you on your way.

Be sure to join us on Twitter, live next Tuesday, December 15 at 7 p.m. ET for #AskCommonApp, where you will hear more college application tips and advice, directly from admissions counselors.
