College of the Atlantic is a small, liberal arts college on the coast of Mount Desert Island, Maine. All students design their own program of study in human ecology, an educational approach that integrates knowledge from across academic disciplines and personal experience to investigate, and ultimately improve, the relationships between humans and our natural, social, and built environments. COA prepares students to be independent thinkers, to address pressing environmental and social issues, and to be passionately engaged in transforming the world around them into a better place.

Visit us

We hear this time and time again, and it’s true, that there really is no better way to get to know our campus and community than to visit and experience it for yourself. Regular campus tours are offered Monday through Friday year-round. During the school year, visitors can sit in on classes, eat in the dining hall, and talk to current students and faculty. Whenever you come, we invite you to take a tour of campus, meet with admission staff for an interview, and ask lots of questions.

“When your views on the world and your intellect are being challenged and you begin to feel uncomfortable because of a contradiction you've detected that is threatening your current model of the world...pay attention. You are about to learn something.”

William H. Drury, Professor, Ecology, Natural History, 1976
