National Campaign Helps More Seniors Apply to College

The Common Application is grateful to work with several partner organizations that share our commitment to advancing student access and success. In this guest blog post written by Lisa King at the American Council on Education, we are pleased to introduce you to the American College Application Campaign.

As the school year ends, the American College Application Campaign (ACAC) is busy preparing for the Class of 2018. ACAC is a national effort working to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college. Since 2005, ACAC has grown from a single high school initiative in North Carolina, to reaching an estimated 5,733 schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The campaign supports all students, but has a strong focus on engaging first-generation college-going students, low-income students, and students who may not otherwise apply to college. During the 2016 Campaign, more than 774,000 applications were submitted by about 460,000 seniors.

ACAC turned into a nationwide initiative in 2010 when the American Council on Education (ACE) convened a steering committee of government and nonprofit education leaders to guide the effort. By 2014, ACAC had expanded to all 50 states. Since its inception, ACAC has assisted some 1.5 million students in completing approximately 2.5 million college applications.

State application campaigns occur throughout the fall at high schools, most in October and November. Local events are organized by high schools, during the school day, with guidance from ACAC and their state coordinator, with the goal for all seniors to submit at least one college application. State coordinators often turn to higher education and college access organizations to help recruit host high schools and to serve as event volunteers. A list of state coordinators is available on the ACAC website. Additional information about ACAC volunteer opportunities for Common Application members will be provided later this summer.

ACAC will be kicking off the application season with #WhyApply Day on Sept. 22. To celebrate #WhyApply Day, we encourage you to join us in wearing college gear and sharing why students should apply to college using the #WhyApply hashtag on your social media.
