Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a historically Black liberal arts college and the global leader in the education of women of African descent. We are one of the most selective institutions in the country, with an acceptance rate that has reached a historic low — a reflection of both growing demand and our unwavering commitment to excellence.

Application information

Find out about requirements, fees, and deadlines

First-year

Any applicant who has never attended college as a full-time, degree-seeking student is considered a new first-time student. New first-time applicants must show proof of graduation from high school, or the equivalent, prior to enrollment at Spelman College.

Spelman College is test optional. This policy applies to all new first-time application cycles, including early decision, early action, and regular decision. Students who choose to apply without test scores will not be disadvantaged in the review process. Applicants who wish to have SAT or ACT scores considered may submit them, and scores will be reviewed as part of our holistic application process.

Transfer

A transfer applicant has completed a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and has attended another college for at least one term as a degree-seeking student. Transfer admission to Spelman is selective; applicants must have earned fewer than 60 semester hours, or the equivalent, at their previous institution. Applicants must be in good standing and eligible to return to their prior institution.

Additional Information

For detailed information about application requirements, deadlines, and campus visit opportunities, prospective students are encouraged to visit the Spelman College Office of Admissions website or contact our office directly. Our team is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

Visit us

We invite prospective students and their families to experience Spelman in person. The Office of Admissions hosts campus visits Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. Each visit includes an admissions presentation and a guided campus tour led by a Spelman Student Ambassador. Plan to spend approximately one and a half hours with us.

“Together we will work tirelessly to expand student access, reduce financial barriers, support our world-class faculty, and ensure our daughters leave these gates fully equipped to not just navigate a changing world, but to actively shape it.”
