First-year

The Admissions Committee weighs a number of factors in making its decision for First Year Applicants. In addition to grade point average and the strength of curriculum, we also review the high school profile and class rank, extracurricular involvement, and the Common App essay to determine admissibility.

Transfer

Transfer applicants are considered to be students who have completed college-level coursework at an institution of higher education after receiving a high school diploma or a GED. The Admissions Committee reviews areas within the applicant’s academic record including grades in all college-level coursework (especially in intended major courses), overall GPA, strength of curriculum, and academic trend as well as extracurricular involvement, and the Common App essay to determine admissibility.

The best way to understand #RetrieverNation is to experience it for yourself! Throughout the year, UMBC offers several opportunities for prospective and admitted students and their guests to visit campus - both in-person and virtually. Explore options to connect with faculty, staff, and current students through campus tours, open house events, virtual student panels, and more at undergraduate.umbc.edu/visits.

“My favorite UMBC experience has been getting involved with research. I love being able to apply what I learn in the classroom to hands-on work. I’ve been lucky enough to network with accomplished scientists at conferences, have ownership over my own projects, and learn from great mentors and peers.”
