First-year

Freshmen include anyone who is currently in high school or who has not taken college coursework after high school.

Step 1:  Complete your application.  Freshman can apply via the Common Application or UW System Application.  Are you a new freshman applying exclusively to UWM or UW system schools? The UW System will provide an expedited experience. If you are applying to UWM and other schools outside of the UW System, the Common App will be most helpful.

The application fee is $25. Need based fee waivers are available for those who qualify.

Step 2:  Send official high school transcripts and ACT/SAT scores (if you’re under 21) to UWM if you have them. UWM will accept unofficial high school transcripts and self-reported test scores as well. If you indicated you’d like to pursue test optional admissions review on your application, you will not be required to submit ACT/SAT scores.

Step 3:  Receive your Admissions Decision.  Our team of admissions professionals evaluates qualified candidates through a comprehensive, individualized review process. Please allow up to 3 weeks for an admission decision after your application file is complete.

Additional Information

As a public university, UWM is already a great value. We’re proud to make it even more affordable with merit and need-based scholarships for undergraduate students.

Chancellor’s Merit Scholarships:  We are pleased to introduce Chancellor’s Merit Scholarships, which are new scholarships for freshmen starting in Fall 2021. These merit scholarships will be given in varying amounts to students who meet eligibility criteria.  Chancellor’s Merit Scholarships are renewable for up to four years.

Milwaukee Advantage Program (MAP):  Students from Illinois and Minnesota receive an additional $1,000 award each year through the Milwaukee Advantage Program (MAP). There is no application to fill out for a MAP award. Eligibility is determined based on information in students’ applications.

Panther Scholarship Portal:  Many other scholarships are available to UWM students based on such things as test scores, class rank, GPA, major, hometown, transfer status and life experiences. Some are worth up to $5,000. Earning these scholarships can help you reduce the cost of college and the amount you’ll owe after graduation.  To find out which scholarships you qualify for, visit the Panther Scholarship Portal.

Need Based Grants:  UWM offers a wide array of need-based grants. To qualify, students must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). International and undocumented students must complete the Non-FAFSA Need Based Worksheet.
