Columbia University

Columbia University

Founded in 1754, Columbia University in the City of New York is at once a small college and a major research university: an Ivy League education on a human scale. That means working in small classes and labs with pioneering faculty in every field from the classic to the cutting edge. It means being part of one of the most diverse student bodies in the world. It means our signature Core Curriculum along with stellar undergraduate research with world-renowned faculty. It means living in a city driven by the smartest, newest ideas. It means any pursuit, every opportunity is here.

Application information

First-year

We ask first-year applicants to submit the Common Application, Coalition Application or QuestBridge Application with Columbia-specific questions, a secondary school report, two teacher recommendations and optional SAT or ACT scores (self-reported). The admissions process at Columbia is a holistic one, which means that every part of the application matters to help inform our judgment.

Transfer

To be eligible to enroll as a transfer student at Columbia, an applicant must have completed, or be registered for, 24 points of credit (the equivalent of one year of full-time study) at another institution, as well as have earned a high school diploma or equivalent (by the application deadline). Candidates with more than four semesters of college coursework elsewhere are not encouraged to apply.

Additional Information

At Columbia, it is your ability that matters. Not your ability to pay. We offer one of the most generous financial aid programs of any school, and our approach to affordability is simple: Need-based. Need-blind. Full need. Columbia awards over $175 million annually in scholarships and grants, and our need-based aid is in the form of grants and student work only, not loans.

Visit us

Reservations for in-person, on-campus programs are required for all visitors. The most current visit information can be found here.

The best things of the moment were outside the rectangle of Columbia; the best things of all human history and thought were inside. You could spend four years in an unforgettably exciting and improving alternation between two realms of magic. That doubled magic is lasting me a lifetime.
