As one of the nation’s leading public institutions, UVA pushes the boundaries of what’s possible – always in the name of the greater good. One of the things that makes this possible is an unswerving commitment to initiatives that grow, strengthen and shape our institution for the future.

First-year

First-year applicants can apply to: College of Arts & Sciences, School of Architecture, School of Engineering, School of Nursing, and the Kinesiology Program in the School of Education. UVA values intellectual ability, academic achievement, and personal qualities that will contribute to the University community in the application review. Founded as a public university with the intention of educating Virginians, two-thirds of the undergraduate students at UVA have Virginia domicile. We do not have quotas from specific schools, towns, counties, or regions.

Transfer

UVA welcomes transfer applications to all schools and colleges within the University. Applicants who have completed at least one full year (at least 24 semester hours after high school graduation) of college study before entering the University are considered most competitive by the Committee on Admission. Summer is not considered part of this minimum. Transfer students who enroll at UVA must spend at least two full years in residency at the University.

Additional Information

Diversity stands with ethics, integrity, and academic excellence, as a cornerstone of University culture. The University promotes an inclusive and welcoming environment that embraces the full spectrum of human attributes, perspectives, and disciplines. When people of different backgrounds come together, they exchange ideas, question assumptions (including their own), and broaden the horizons for us all.  A University of Virginia community rich in diversity affords every member equal respect and provides a forum for understanding our differences as well as our commonalities.

Visit us

The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, a small city in Central Virginia. The campus, locally referred to as "Grounds," is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The best way for prospective high school students to get to know UVA is to visit. Leave time in your schedule to explore Charlottesville, rated one of the happiest cities in America!

The very best faculty, students and staff are going to want to live, work and study at institutions in which they can believe wholeheartedly; institutions that are both outstanding and ethical; institutions that are excellent, but excellent for a purpose.
