Five Things Parents Need to Know About the 2016-2017 Common App

Your child may be eagerly awaiting August 1 - when the 2016-2017 Common Application will be available. As you help your child along their path to college, know that both of you have support right here.

Here are five things you can do to assist your child, whenever they are ready to start the college application process:

1. You need to know what your child needs to know. Fortunately, we've made a list: Five Things Applicants Need to Know.

2. Explore This site was designed with specific resources for students, counselors, and you. There are tools for planning ahead and paying for college. The Virtual Counselor will provide you and your child with tips on everything from requesting letters of recommendation and starting the personal essay to searching for colleges to find the best fit.

3. Discover something new. Perhaps one of the greatest benefits to using the Common App is its access to nearly 700 colleges and universities. Remind your child of their opportunity to connect with a wide range of schools - each one with special qualities, just like your child. Take some time with your child to explore what they have to offer. You may very well discover something new.

4. This journey is not a race. Applying to college is a deliberate and thoughtful process. It starts at different times for each student. Your child may have created their Common App account already and will roll over some of their information on August 1. Maybe your child has been focused on other activities. Don't worry. Either situation is fine. Your child can and should take the time they need to do their best work.

5. There's always support available. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Common App Solutions Center is ready to help.
