Common App, Better Make Room Partnership to Provide College Info Through Text Messaging

The Common Application has partnered with the Better Make Room national texting and social media campaign to provide high school students with personalized guidance and encouragement on how to apply and pay for college. Better Make Room is a collaboration between the nonprofit organization Civic Nation and the U.S. Department of Education. Partners like The Common Application will ensure that inspirational and informative text messages reach hundreds of thousands of students at a critical point in their lives - when they decide to pursue a college degree.

"The Common Application is such a wonderful partner because we share in the mission to create a college-going culture. We believe we can change the future of education in America by empowering young people with the right resources, motivation, and confidence so that they're determined to do something great. They're driven to follow their dreams by continuing their education after high school," said Don Yu, Director of Better Make Room. "The Common App's incredible reach to so many students makes them a powerful partner."

Starting this fall and throughout winter, students who've created a Common App account and opted in to receive communications will receive text messages from the Common App. These messages offer free tools for each step of the college application process: staying organized and keeping track of deadlines, filling out the FAFSA early, sending SAT/ACT scores to colleges, and meeting with counselors to discuss financial aid award letters.

"Given the Common App's unique interaction with students, we see this partnership as an incredible opportunity to connect with our applicants - one-third of whom are the first in their families to go to college - right where they are, within the application," said Jenny Rickard, Executive Director for The Common Application.
